A turn of phrase in phone conversation got me to thinking?
Which sounds better? — Library Instruction Session or Library Learning Session?
I somehow like the idea of “lession session” as it makes it seem that the students are doing something (as in learning) instead of being “instructed” upon. A colleague likes to use the term “workshop” because it conveys action. Does it matter the words we choose to describe this? I think so.
Tags: instruction, libraries, metaphors, wordsAs a fan of meaningful metaphors, it was interesting during the PNLA conference to visit the Coeur d’Laine Public Library which bills itself as the “Coeur of the Community”. The word “coeur” in French means “heart” so in effect the library is positioning itself as the heart of the community. Coeur d’Laine itself means “heart of the awl” which is weird to boot.
I love how the library is tying itself in with the name of the city. Also (as was pointed out to me by another librarian) “coeur” sounds a little like core, so there is another layer to the meaning. I think the use of “couer” is pretty a robust metaphor that is already in the consciousness of the community on a lot of levels. Pretty savvy me thinks!
I wonder if the Boise Public Library could take advantage of the “city of trees” slogan associated with Boise. Perhaps the library could be the “roots of the community”… or maybe the topsoil?

I wonder if libraries are the ultimate in steampunk because they mix the old (books) with the new (computers and databases)…. thoughts?
