Quick Update:

Just two quick things…

1. A library digital collection I worked on was named in BEST OF BOISE in BOISE WEEKLY as BEST ONLINE LIT BROWSING. I am very proud that this was recognized by BW. I was hoping the collection would go beyond academia and into the public sphere. This is proof to that.

2.  The next piece of news, is that I am going to be a camper at THATCamp PNW which is The Humanities And Technology Camp – Pacific Northwest. This is one of those un-conference deal-o’s where you see what everyone brings to the table and decide from there what to talk about. I am excited to be attending and will be bringing along the posters we created for PNLA about Digital Collections in the Northwest and the Western Writers Series Digital Editions (also mentioned above).

Timeline of a Librarian : Poster Presentation @ 2009 PNLA Conference

(sorry for the blurry poster – click here to view it in all it’s glory!)

Had a great visit to Missoula at the beginning of this month for the 2009 PNLA conference. If you want to get a flavor of what went on there, view my colleague Memo’s Flickr set here. I ended up presenting / co-presenting three posters. Yes, three!  They were all very well received. Links to the posters and abstracts are below:

100 Amazing Flickr Collections for Architecture Buffs

100 Amazing Flickr Collections for Architecture Buffs | Graduate Degree.

Some people stare at the ocean, I tend to stare at buildings and walls. There is a great list of architecture pics linked on the above site. I love it, love it, love it. I don’t have to search for this now (or create it myself).

Perhaps libraries should start to cull websites like this…. Consider a top 100 websites about … (you fill it in).  Have we abandoned that for the simple keyword search? I wonder what we lose in discovery by zooming in so far with a keyword search.  It would be cool if we could zoom in/out of our searches like on all the digital maps websites.  Zoom straight to the word on the page, then paragraph, then chapter, then book, then books next to it on the shelf, then books related to it, etc.

See what you think about when you stare at buildings…

Thanks to Core77 for the heads up.

Online NW – Coming up

I will be at the Online NW conference this upcoming week. I will be giving a presentation on the Western Writers Digital Editions that I helped get up and running last year. I am still working on the presentation. I hoping to incorporate an online scavenger hunt within the digital collection as well as doing some crazy bingo thing when I am talking. Trying to liven it up a bit since I have an hour to fill. An hour is a lot to work with… might have show a movie or something to fill up the time… just kidding.

If you are at the conference, drop by and say hello!

Abstract of presentation:

Wrangling a Digital Collection into Existence: The Boise State Western Writers Series Digital Editions
Rick Stoddart, Boise State University

Wrangling a Digital Collection into Existence: The Boise State Western Writers Series Digital Editions. The distance between identifying an opportunity to implement a digital collection and actually getting it off the ground and onto the web is about as wide as the Grand Canyon. Learn about the trials, tribulations, and tears experienced in willing the Western Writers Series Digital Editions into an online existence. Navigating a new digital collection between multiple departments, server upgrades, and quirks in online hosting platforms is a hair-pulling thrill-ride! The audience will come away with a sense of what obstacles to look for and anticipate when creating digital collections for their libraries. The WWS Digital Editions are a collaboration between Albertsons Library Special Collections and the Boise State University English Department to bring out-of-print Western Writers Series titles to the public.

Shelving books by typeface?

Idea: What if books were shelved by typeface/font of the text?

Or if books were shelved by typface/font of the title on spine?

How many style-points would you give a library that did that?
