#onw2010 Librarian fashion

As always, interesting librarian fashion at this conference. You have your casual librarian. Your hip librarian. Your librarian dressinb for potential employers. Your frumpy librarians. Librarians with nose rings. Librarians with tattoos. Librarians in flat shoes. Librarians in colorful stockings. Librarians with unique glasses. We librarians are a diverse bunch. That is what makes us both fun and great! :)

#onw2010 Web Traffic session

Really interesting presentation of web page data. The interpretation of the data is interesting. For example PSU has 80% of users residing mainly on the top level pages perhaps due to their emphasis on everything being 3 clicks away while OHSU has a longer tail that people interact with webpages that are “buried” on the site which seems fine for their needs.
There is a call for benchmarking data for the different types of libraries since there seems not to be anything specific for libraries as unique webpages as compared to commercial websites.
Web statistics are fuzzy and getting the data is a real challenge.

#onw2010 Not a winner

Well, I didn’t win any of the awesome door prizes which included a flip camera and a database from a vendor. But I guess I am a winner for being here ;)

Up next is a presentation on web traffic and campus trends.

#onw2010 Lunch!

As usual, OnlineNW puts out a great spread. Super salad buffet with vegan and gluten-free options. Waiting for the door prizes to be announced. Wish me luck.

#onw2010 WCL Session#2

I have a new appreciation for my university’s implementation of Worldcat Local.  It sounds very complex. WSU formed a taskforce which did a trial, testing, and training for everyone (did we do all that?). Also need to think at a network level when cataloging which is a change in the culture of cataloging at the local level. Interesting the challenges about how to integrate libraries at multiple campuses into WCL.  WSU has implemented the “buy it” button in their records display. I like it. I wonder if that is something we could do at our institution. I am going to have follow up with how WSU and UO displays WCL on their homepages looks like they are doing it better than we currently are at BSU.

WCL also provides better format delineation (dvd vs. print) that the old catalog.  The records in WCL are more robust and return more results than previous searches in the old catalog WCL lays upon.  Good point in that we don’t see the KWIC (keyword in context) why does WCL return results (i.e. search terms not highlighted in returned record).

Wow, WSU had mapping to individual books physical location available in their old catalog. Wonder if that was used much by students?

All and all, seems like WSU has the same issues. Is WCL functional for patrons? Is WCL functional for librarians? Is WCL  functional for learning?
