Writing in Books

Do you write in your books?

Emphasizing Text!

Emphasizing Text!

I recently checked this book out the library. Somebody wanted me to know a “children’s personality is to grow naturally without being affected by too much adult interference.”  They even included a sticky note and arrow for emphasis!

I have started making notes in my books a bit more. Often I share books with others. I kind of want to share my thoughts to. I think sometimes when we share a book, we are also sharing ways of thinking, emotions, feelings, ways of seeing the world. If you share a book with a person you have a common understanding and language to draw from.

I wonder if it wasn’t as taboo to write in books we would have a better understanding of these texts and how they engage us on different levels. Would we understand the past better? Would we understand our peers/culture/selves better?

I love finding things in books too, that have been used as book marks.
Bus transfers.
Airline ticket stubs.
Grocery lists.
Box tops from old products.
String.

I tend to leave these things in there for the next person to find.

Will electronic texts ever engage us the same way? Do tags and comments have as much resonance and history to past readers attached? Is there any emotion or feeling there?
